Naalala ko yung mga panahong mas kilala ako sa tawag na Nitrosaint. Hindi pa karamihan ang nagagawa kong website nung mga panahong 'yon. Isa sa mga ginawa kong website ay yung Badsaintz Website. Offline na siya ngayon pero nagawan ko naman ng back-up kahit papaano.

Habang binabalikan ko yung mga ginawa ko noong araw, napadaan ako sa forum ng high school batch namin.

Moving out to wordpress or not

I have been contemplating on moving out to a new blog platform this last few weeks. I already asked Jehz and a couple of bloggers if I should or should not move to a new platform. My desires of leaving blogger for a newer platform increases everyday. I find a lot of needs which my existing platform can not provide.

I'm eyeing on migrating my BatangYagit.com to wordpress. Most of my non-blogger blogs are using Wordpress. I find wordpress more robust as compared to Blogger. Back-end design is also easier using wordpress, so as front-end design and blog aesthetics.

The cons of moving to wordpress are the following:

• It needs more maintenance. I have to make sure that my blog uses the most up-to-date version of wordpress. And sometimes, upgrading is a pain in the neck specially on a major version change.
• High risk of losing traffic. Since I'll be moving out to a new platform, there is a risk of losing traffic since the URL of my posts will be changed. A large number of my previous posts are optimized for search engine traffic.
• Paid bandwidth. Since it is self hosted, I'd be spending money for my bandwidth. My blog will have limited amount of resources. There is no assurance that my blog will be up forever.
• Need for a hosting provider. I have an existing web host but I don't think it can manage to have another load of traffic. My idea is to get a new hosting account from Gossimer.com. I've been looking into their services and find them ok. They have a few selection of hosting plans I can choose from. I'm deciding if I'd go for their Starter Plan or go big time with their Business Plan.
  

Up 'til now, I haven't decided yet. I'm still on the process of thinking whether my advantages outweighs the cons that I have mentioned.

Tips Before You Buy Online

Last December, I bought a few items from e-Bay, a touch screen replacement for a Sony Ericsson P910 Phone and a screen protector for my iPod Video. The items I bought were from a merchant in Hong Kong. Luckily, the transaction was not fraudulent and the items were sent to my house while I was in Manila.

The item was shipped through an ordinary HK Courier service. The merchant did not have a tracking number to track the parcel.

After I got my PayPal and done this online shopping thing, I though it would be a good idea to give tips before you shop online.


Tip 1: Consider buying as an option, not as a mere end.

Think first before you buy then ask your self, "Do I really need to buy this item?". Consider your reasons. If it's indeed a need, then go and get yourself that item. Buy if it's for the sake of "I-want-that-item-because-its-sooo-cute", then save yourself from spending electronic bucks.


Tip 2: Look for a trusted e-commerce site.

So far, I only tried eBay because I know it's high reputation and reliability when it comes to online shopping. You can also try other shops like Amazon, Dixons and PC World. Find or ask reviews from other users who have done online shopping from your desired shop.

Tip 3: Check the merchant's reputation.

For sites like eBay, consumers are given the option to rate the reputation and reliability of the merchant where they bought the item. This ensures the consumers a guarantee of the merchant's reliability.


Tip 4: Know the transaction and payment method..

Learn if the payment and transaction method being used is secured. A lot of phishing sites are out in the internet which tricks users when doing online transactions. So far, I only get to use PayPal and my Visa Electron card and I have not yet encountered any attempts of phishing or other illegal transactions.


Tip 5: Check and compare prices.

It's not enough to know where you can buy your item. You should also learn which seller offers the best price for a certain product. I encountered this website in the internet which is very helpful in locating the best buys in the internet. Save Bucks has this price compare feature wherein you can get the different prices from the different online shops when you do a single product search. It's pretty helpful when you are in need to compare prices of your desired product. I used this as a reference in buying products online since I get to know the product's price in the market.


Tip 6: Patience.

Be patient. Usually, the delivery of your parcel takes a few weeks before it arrives. The items I bought took three weeks before I received it. Just follow the tips I have suggested above and be assured that your product will arrive. If not, you can always verify it from your merchant or seller.

DigitalPuto: A new Batang Yagit blog

I bought two domains this week. Last Thursday, out of boredom, I bought a domain for Awitenista. It was a great buy since I was able to get it at a lower price. Thanks to that magic coupon Kuya Blogie gave me to get discounts in buying domains from Go Daddy.


Just this afternoon, I launched another website. I call it Digital Puto. It's a photo blog which I share with other amateur Davao Digital Photography practitioners like me. As of now, there are four of us who contribute for the said blog.

Lattice Lacing on my Denim Chucks

Last Sunday, I searched from google the keywords "How to tie a shoe lace". Pretty noob right? Hehehe.

The first site in google's list is Ian's Shoelace Site. I was able to look into several samples posted in his site. The site also offers several tutorials on how to tie your shoe lace.

I was looking for some cool way to tie the lace of my shoes. I ended up with his tutorial on Lattice Lacing. The tutorial is very easy to follow. Illustrations are also available. I didn't even read the instructions. The illustrations are clear and easy enough to be understood.

Aside from the tutorials, his site also features a gallery of different shoes tied in different ways. The samples varies from different brands, styles, and colors. You can also combine different lacing techniques.

Noob it may seem but the results are very cool. I'll try another variation next time.

Ateneo students can now view grades online

Good news for Ateneans (Davao) like me. There's no need for us to fall in line at the registrar's office to see our grades. The grades and account balance can now be inquired through the University Website.

A lot of students, and parents, have been requesting this feature before so that grades and account balance can be inquired online. Thanks to the Ateneo Webteam that they have fabricated this system that could make use of the finance and registrar records to integrate it with the existing web site.

I didn't notice this feature not until one of our colleagues opened the Ateneo Website to check her grades. I was amazed that they already installed this feature. It might be helpful for those students who would want to reduce the hassle of queuing at the finance and registrar's office.

I still remember the time where I was part of the Ateneo Web Team. It was proposed before that this system should be implemented since it would benefit to the students a lot. But for some administrative issues, the proposal was rejected. I'm so glad they have approved it this time.

To access the Ateneo myAccount feature, click on the Quick Links drop down menu at the right panel of the Ateneo Homepage. It's so sad that they did not make it evident on the site's navigation. A lot of students are still not aware of this.

For first time users who have not changed their passwords, use your 5-digit Student ID for the Student ID Field and the long set of numbers (and a letter) under your ID's barcode as your password.

Layout Fixed

I apologize to everyone for the inconvenience my blog layout have brought to you. Thanks for those who noticed the mess.

Last week, I made a request to host to fix a problem/bug in my account. My account is having a problem calculating the free space available. They responded and told me that the only solution for this is to recreate my account. So I agreed and my account was recreated.

I was expecting everything to be fine. I backed-up all my files. Everything was supposed to be fine. But it did not went the way I expect it. My nitropixel.net domain won't bind with my hosting account. I've tried everything but still I got no luck. Until now, this problem remains unfixed. They are suggesting that my account should be recreated again.

All of my Batang Yagit layout graphics are hosted under my NitroPixel domain. If you have noticed last week, the images were missing. The texts were unreadable. I apologize for this inconvenience. It's fixed now. I've been away for few days and been busy with my exams that's why I was not able to fix it. But now, I'm back!

Tocino-flavored bubble gum

I spent most of my day today with Pre. For those of you who do not know, this little girl (diagnosed for autism, just kiddin) is one of our Literary Editors. She asked me, after having our dinner at JFC (yes it's JFC), to redesign her Tocino-flavored Bubble Gum site. And so I did. I come up with this design. I only redesigned the page's header and I also did some CSS Tweaks. I guess it did not look that bad after all.

I can still remember the times (around 2000) when I am still ignorant in the existing of photo-editing applications. The only application I know is the MS Paint. Imagine me working my menus and buttons in MS Paint. The only "Formal" editing application I have used during these times is the Ulead Photo Express which is quite similar to the application used in the 'instant' Kodak Digital Print machine.

I was in 4th year when I first used a "real" professional photo editing tool. I bought this Macromedia MX Studio from the stalls in Ayala MRT Station. It was then that I was engaged in using Macromedia Firefox MX for my web and graphics design. (Improving ang graphics design ng bata). It was then also that I was able to grab several awards from different competitions involing web design in the country. (ehem ehem)

It was only in college that I find the use of Photoshop better.

Nostalgia, my old web site

I missed my old website a lot. Eto yung natatanging website na na-maintain ko ng napakatagal not until last year when it was hacked by some German hackers. Sinara rin eventually yung account kasi raw may exploit sa site ko kaya tinanggalan ako ng host namin ng rights sa account ko.

Eto yung ilan sa mga ala-ala at trivia ng namayapa kong website:

• Badsaintz 07 ang tawag sa website namin dahil ito ang pangalan ng batch namin.
  
• Batch website ito ng section Abad Santos (section ko) at Zamora
• Online na ang website na ito since 2nd year high school (2001) kami.
• Eto yung training grounds ko sa html, java script at nung umasenso na at natuto akong mag-PHP
• Busy ang website na ito dati dahil maraming dumadalaw. (e.g. site owner, classmates, friends, spammers, hackers, at mga nagpapaturo kung pano mag-HTML)
• Dalawang host na ang nilipatan ng site na ito. Una ay yung Geocities at pangalawa at panghuli ang DHost
• Uso dati sa site na ito ang picture of the month. Bawat buwan, may pinapakita kaming spoof or kung ano man (o sino man) ang maisipan kong pagtripan.
• Naka-ilang version na rin kami. Paiba-iba ng design at kung anu-ano pa.
  
• Maraming natutuwa sa mga post namin
• at marami pang iba

Ngayong taon lang na ito, nabura lahat ng files ko kaya hindi ko na narestore ang site namin sa huli nitong state. Nagkaproblema ang computer ko kaya wala akong naitagong back-up nito. Binura rin ng hackers ang lahat ng files ko mula sa host namin.

Nitong gabi lang, ewan ko kung anong pumasok sa isip ko at naisipan kong buksan ang Geocities account ko. Whoala! May nakita pa akong mga files. Nakalimutan ko na bago pala kami lumipat ng dhost, nasa geocities account ko pala nakatago ang mga files namin. Hindi ko pala ito binura dati para may back-up ako kung sakalaing magkaaberya ang aming Badsaintz Site. (hindi pa uso ang Flash Disk sa mga panahong iyon). Tuwang-tuwa ako sa pangyayari. Hindi pa pala ako hopeless. Medyo katawa-tawa yung site ko kumpara sa mga ginagawa kong disenyo ngayon pero at least ok pa rin yung site ko nung mga panahong ginawa ko ito. Sa naaalala ko, dito rin pinattern ang DOST Scholars na website.

Ayos, may mapagkukunan pa ako ng data kung sakaling magkaoras ako na gumawa uli ng bagong site. Eto nga pala ang shot ng lumang site namin.

SMS Gateway, the Bata Edition

The SMS Gateway I made using JAVA, MySQL and PHP.

Kuya Dennis had me buy a bluetooth dongle yesterday which means that I have to continue working on my SMS Project. I started working on it last night. I used HyperTerminal first to try some AT Commands available for my Sony Ericsson K608i. I used the bluetooth service to create a virtual serial communications port on COM5. After issuing AT Commands into my phone, I decided to start working on the real application which would handle the AT Commands and other commands to be issued on external server connections.

I used the javax.comm library for Windows from Sun Micro. It's a JAVA Extension which handles communications on serial devices. I also used the mysql extension for Java. When my phone receives an SMS, the program I made sends an AT Command to check the newly arrived message and parses it into readable form. The decoded message is queried into a MySQL statement and executed. The sql is executed in an external server connection from my laptop to an internet host. I tried using my own server but it won't work. It takes time before the program gives a response and it always fail. So I tried using the host which Kuya Dennis provided me for the project which worked well except that it disconnects after hours of idle time.
So that's all folks. I'm almost done with my work. I'm done with the core. All I have to do now is do some editing to polish some flaws on my application. Heheheh...

I might use this on my next Smart SWEEP Entry. hehhehe

Nitro goes back to web

my webby thingy has been stucked in the closet this past months. (it's almost a year now). I'm totally outdated of the recent developments in web technology. The last project I developed was a project implemented on AJAX. And when was that? That was the time where there was a limited amount of available resources about AJAX in the internet. I was left behind.

I'm just glad that next week, starting Monday, i'd be starting to grasp back from the hobby i have left. I'll be doing my ojt at Cerveo Computer Systems. Thanks to Kuya Dennis who granted my request to conduct my training in his company.
