Thinking about work

I mentioned before in one of my blog posts (Working dilemma) on how uneasy I feel about graduating, specially on finding a good career to take. It seems that this dilemma is inevitable. I am slowly drawn towards finding good business leads and working opportunities.

Last Friday, a representatives from a company named Advanced World Systems went to our school to give a qualifying exam for their company. Based on what I have learned during their brief orientation, their company is a Japanese owned company with different branches all over the world. They have three branches in the Philippines alone, two in Metro Manila (Alabang and Makati) and one in Cebu. AWS specializes on software technologies, embedded systems and a few in hardware systems.

I was fortunate that I passed the qualifying exam. I also had the interview in the afternoon, right after they released the results of the exams. Based on the interview, it seems that this company suits my expertise and interests. There's nothing better than working in a company I like. Right now, I'm hoping that they will call me in two weeks time. The only thing which keeps me from this is my board exam. They asked me if I'd have to choose over their company and my licensure exam, which of these two would I choose. I chose the latter.

Anyway, whatever will be the outcome of that interview, I'm still hoping that I'd see my self in the future according to what I have planned for my life. I'm still on the process of preparing my self for the unexpected. I only have a month left for this chapter of my life.

Working at night, taking the shots

I'm not referring to liquor shots. Not the ones sold in San Diego entertainment clubs.

Last night, I was out with some of my colleagues for a photo shoot. The subject of our photo shoot is Urban at night. All the shots were taken in the streets. We went from the streets around Marco Polo to the landmarks in San Pedro. We were also able to take some shots from the construction site of the soon to rise condominium near the SM mall. The last shoot we made was at the Airport Road in Buhangin.

It's such an ironic thing to see that a busy metro at day would be a deserted city at night. The usual noisy streets is deafening in silence. But a different beauty arises in the dark. The lights give a tranquil environment to the city.

Street children, even at night, were still playing in the streets. The little gamblers doesn't seem to feel tired of what they were doing. I wondered if the kids have a home awaiting for them.

That photo shoot was a tough job. We started 8 p.m and ended up at 2 in the morning. That was the reason why I started my day at one this afternoon.

I might be posting some of my shots later. Photography is really fun.

My First Formal Job Interview

What a life indeed.

I missed yesterday's PAL Job interview. Though I'm not much interested in working with Philippine Airlines, I still regret missing my first job interview experience. But in every cloud, there's always a silver lining. I learned from my classmate that another company is coming to conduct another job interview for the graduating students. At least I can still get my nerves high.

I rushed back to home after we brought the project to school. I immediately sent an inquiring to our division chairperson, asking what outfit should we wear. Formal or business attire, sh*t.

I had to wear (again) that old business outfit that was stored for ages inside my closet. By the sound of my previous statement, I do not have an enthusiasm for wearing formal outfit. Anything with colar and long sleeves does not drive my appetite for clothing.

The interview was scheduled at 1:30pm. It was almost 12 noon and I can't find a belt to wear. I had to rush to the mall to buy a new one. I also had my lunch at Kenny's which is the nearest restaurant from the mall's department store.

After eating and buying the stuff I needed, I went back to school. OMG, I forgot to bring my resume (or I just didn't had the time to print one). I had to talk to the HR lady and tell her that I was only informed in the morning and I have not prepared anything. But thanks to her goodness that she let me do the resume while I wait for my turn to be interviewed. That was not a good impression for the employer's view though.

The new company is Souhatsu which is an automotive part supplier. It's a Japanese owned company which is based in Cebu City. Some parts of the car are manufactured by Souhatsu. They also have the latest ISO/TQ Certification which makes their company globally competitive. Most of their clients are coming from United States, Europe, Japan and some parts of Asia.

One part before the interview is the written exam. The topics in the exam were assorted. The early part of the exam had something to do with Engineering Management and Statistics. The two subjects which I didn't take seriously. The math part was easy. The analogy part was annoying because I didn't understand some of the words used. Most of these words are in the deepest sections of the dictionary. I guess I need to improve my vocabulary.

During the interview, I got a bit nervous. It's my first experience in getting interviwed for a prospect career for my future. The interview went well. From the looks of it, I can see that the Japanese emplyers are looking for a Supervisor which can work in the Cebu production plant. Getting a supervisory job in a Japanese owned company is a good start.

I'm not hoping of being hired by their company because I am not interested in the automotive manufacturing field. But if I'd be lucky enough to be chosen, I would still be very glad. At least there's a group of people who trust my knowledge and capabilities. I'm excited for another job interview. I wonder how it would go.

So that was the SMS I received yesterday. This morning, I woke up from my cellphone's beep. The person from DM** texted me and he's asking me if I could drop by his office this afternoon. Weeeee....I'm so excited. I'm hoping I could close the deal. Wish me luck.

Would you decline this offer?

Opportunity knocks only once. Yesterday, I was offered to conduct a training in Brunei. The training would focus on Web and Graphics design. It's a seven-day training with pre-made training modules, which means that it would be easier for me to facilitate the training since may nakahandang training plan na. Also, they would be the one who would process my professional working visa. Diba? Ok na ok yung offer. And I would also earn $100 per day. One week po yan.

I was about to accept the offer pero nagbago ang isip ko. When I checked the University schedule, the return date from Brunei would fall on a week before our advisory exams. Eto yung mga panahong ginagapang namin ang lahat ng subject dahil sa sunod-sunod na mga long quiz ang pre-exam tests. I'm gonna be busy also with my project for the prelims. Not to mention pa yung project study at patong patong na projects from my 5 major subjects.

Medyo nakakapanghinayang yung pagbitiaw ko sa opportunity na nasa kamay ko na. But I can't exchange my studies for anything. Mamaya na yang mga etra2x na yan pagkatapos ng pag-aaral. I'll get my license first before I engage into anything work related. Marami pang oras at panahon (Sana nga at di pa huli). I can still do more.


P.S. Pasensya na po at medyo 2 days delayed ang posting ng entry na to. School's hell for me now. Busy. Very Busy.

SMS Gateway, the Bata Edition

The SMS Gateway I made using JAVA, MySQL and PHP.

Kuya Dennis had me buy a bluetooth dongle yesterday which means that I have to continue working on my SMS Project. I started working on it last night. I used HyperTerminal first to try some AT Commands available for my Sony Ericsson K608i. I used the bluetooth service to create a virtual serial communications port on COM5. After issuing AT Commands into my phone, I decided to start working on the real application which would handle the AT Commands and other commands to be issued on external server connections.

I used the javax.comm library for Windows from Sun Micro. It's a JAVA Extension which handles communications on serial devices. I also used the mysql extension for Java. When my phone receives an SMS, the program I made sends an AT Command to check the newly arrived message and parses it into readable form. The decoded message is queried into a MySQL statement and executed. The sql is executed in an external server connection from my laptop to an internet host. I tried using my own server but it won't work. It takes time before the program gives a response and it always fail. So I tried using the host which Kuya Dennis provided me for the project which worked well except that it disconnects after hours of idle time.
So that's all folks. I'm almost done with my work. I'm done with the core. All I have to do now is do some editing to polish some flaws on my application. Heheheh...

Second day of work and I can't go home...

It's second day of work. The bluetooth dongle that i was ranting about yesterday is not yet available. I guess I have to get my self a new one from CDR-King. Kuya dennis gave me another task to work on. Hmm... I like the sound of it. PHP and Database. I need to provide a database of board exam passers from different fields from different years. Ahuh! the PRC Website is not working so I have to dig the web to find my sources. I found mine at http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/. It's good that they keep their own file in their website. I finished around 5p.m. 70,000 entries to my MySQL Database. Whoah! This is the biggest table that i have made so far (in terms of number of data rows).

I want to go home... My head aches badly, a side effect of brain work maybe. But I can't cause it's still raining. I wish it would stop now..

My first day of work (Part 2)

SMS > Phone > Bluetooth > COM > JAVA > MySQL > PHP > Web

This would be the things that I'm going to work on. Interfacing the web and mobile phones. This project is a challenge for me since i will be starting from scratch. I had to review my Java programming skills.

Interrupted (I'm trying to finish a layout. They need it tomorrow)

Anywho, as I was saying... I have to do some review on Java Programming. Though it was not so long ago since I last programmed in Java, I still find my self a bit dumb on this language. I just know the basics. And what we learned in school is an overstatement for basic. Urgh! Programming keeps on growing everyday and I was not able to cope with the changes.

For my project, I might be using my own phone. (Kuya Dennis has a sony ericsson phone which i think is still compatible with my k608i). I' might be needing my bluetooth dongle which happened to be broken now. I'm still waiting for the bluetooth dongle from kuya dens. Since I can't establish a COM Port between my phone and pc without the dongle, I made myself do some researching on JAVA Interfacing for COM Ports. I downloaded some codes, tutorials and the like. It was a boring thing to do.

Also, during my boring moments... i started working on the new encoding system for Kalasag. I'm still working on it now coz we'll be needing it on the first week of june. At least we could implement the system by then.

I left cerveo at 6pm. The first day wasn't bad at all. I'll be working on a project first hand. (and alone)

P.S. Did I mention that this project is part of the project study that I will be conducting next year? Lucky me!

My first day of work (Part 1)

I'm just waiting for the time. After lunch, i'll leave for work. Kuya Dennis, the company's CEO, gave me an assignment two days ago. I haven't solved it yet but at least I am doing progress. He wants me to make a solution on how to save SMS in a MySQL Server. I'm still on it. I'm still on the binary decoding part. After I figure this out, I can start working on the application for transporting the decoded data to a MySQL table. Whew? Want to help me? I accept suggestions...
